Summary

To reduce reliance on costly LiNO₃-based melting-point reduction and mitigate freezing risks in thermal
energy storage systems, this study developed Li-free nitrate/nitrite molten-salt phase change materials using a
synergistic NaNO₂–Ca(NO₃)₂ strategy. Eight formulations were prepared by static fusion and evaluated for
phase-change behavior, thermal stability, heat storage capacity, and compatibility with 316L stainless steel.
The optimal composition, 15 wt.% Ca(NO₃)₂–50 wt.% KNO₃–5 wt.% NaNO₃–30 wt.% NaNO₂, exhibited a
principal melting endset temperature of 102.3 ℃, a melting enthalpy of 265.7 J·g⁻¹, a T₃% value of 637 ℃, an
average specific heat capacity of 1.824 kJ·kg⁻¹·K⁻¹, a volumetric storage density of 1.985 × 10⁹ J·m⁻³, and an
apparent corrosion rate of 0.0055 mm·year⁻¹. These results demonstrate that NaNO₂–Ca(NO₃)₂ synergy
provides an effective route for developing low-cost, low-melting molten-salt PCMs.
