THERMAL DESIGN OF NON AIR CONDITIONED BUILDINGS IN HOT CLIMATES.

Summary

IN MANY HOT CLIMATES THE LEVELS OF COMFORT CAN BE ACHIEVED IN WELL DESIGNED BUILDINGS THAT ARE NOT AIR CONDITIONED. ALTHOUGH INVOLVED COMPUTER PROGRAMS ARE AVAILABLE TO PREDICT THE THERMAL PERFORMANCE, THESE PROGRAMS ARE USUALLY NOT ACCESSIBLE TO DESIGNERS. A SIMPLIFIED METHOD HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO PREDICT THE INDOOR AIR TEMPERATURE OF A BUILDING AT THE DESIGN STAGE. THE METHOD ACCOUNTS FOR A BUILDING'S MASS, SHELL THERMAL RESISTANCE, ORIENTATION, EXTERIOR SURFACE COLOUR, NATURAL VENTILATION, AND HEAT GENERATED INSIDE THE BUILDING.
