THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE WITH ENCAPSULATED ICE.

Author(s) : LAYBOURN D. R.

Summary

THE PAPER DESCRIBES AN ENCAPSULATED ICE SYSTEM THAT ACHIEVES A STORAGE DENSITY OF 288 MEGAJOULES/M3 AND A CLOSE-APPROACH EVAPORATOR THAT USES A LIQUID JET FOR REFRIGERANT FEED. THE REFRIGERATION SYSTEM USES LIQUID OVERFEED AND CAN OPERATE AT LOW CONDENSING CONDITIONS. PREDICTED HEAT TRANSFER RATES DURING TANK CHARGING AND DISCHARGE ARE CALCULATED. THE TANK CAN BE FULLY CHARGED IN 16 HOURS AND DISCHARGED OVER 6 HOURS. THESE RATES MAKE THE APPROACH SUITABLE FOR BUILDING COOLING APPLICATIONS.
