Summary

IN INVESTIGATING RELAXATION PROCESSES IN GLASSES IT IS IMPORTANT IN PRINCIPLE TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE INFLUENCE OF THE VIBRATIONS OF THE MEDIUM ON HEAVY PARTICLE TUNNELING IN A TWO-LEVEL SYSTEM. ZERO VIBRATIONS ENHANCE THE TUNNELING PROBABILITY BY SEVERAL ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE. IT IS POSSIBLE TO EXPLAIN THE DOUBLE-PEAK TEMPERATURE DEPENDENCE OF THE INVERSE ATTENUATION LENGTH OF ULTRASOUND, THE TEMPERATURE DEPENDENCE OF THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY AND THE LUMINESCENCE INTENSITY (THE SO-CALLED ).
