Thermosyphon in air conditioning.

Author(s) : DUNSDON K. H.

Summary

In order to reduce the amount of energy used in air conditioning systems, attempts were made, under suitable external ambient conditions, to obtain some form of "free cooling". The thermosyphon system achieves this by diverting the refrigerant gas away from the compressor, again under suitable external ambient conditions, running the condenser fans and achieving the cooling effect by a natural circulation of the refrigerant caused by the difference in density of the gas between the evaporator and condenser. The paper presents a case study of thermosyphoning, installed at British Airways Data Centre, Heathrow. The benefits of the system are highlighted.
