Summary

Solutions are obtained for transient heat conduction within extended surfaces subjected to an arbitrarily time-dependent linear surface dissipation due to a time-varying heat-transfer coefficient. The ideas in the generalized integral transform technique are utilized to provide a complete solution once the associated coupled system of ordinary differential equations is numerically solved for the transformed temperature field. In addition, approximate explicit solutions are proposed for fast estimates in the realm of applications. Such developments are illustrated by considering conical pin fins subjected to a time-decaying heat transfer coefficient to the ambient, and critical comparisons are performed.
