Summary
Finite element analysis of the end cap toroids for the proposed Atlas Experiment at CERN has shown that the resin bonding and insulation system will be subjected to combined tension and shear forces during magnet operation at 4 K. This paper reports the development of a test procedure to evaluate the through-thickness properties of resin based composites at 4 K in uniaxial tension and in a biaxial tension/shear situation. Results from tests using this procedure on specimens manufactured using differing resins and fibre fractions are reported.
