Design of a cryotreatment system and studies of cryogenic treatment on metals.

Author(s) : NADIG D. S., JACOB S., KASTHURIRENGAN S., et al.

Summary

Properties of metals at cryogenic temperatures are important for many scientific and technical applications. To study the changes in thermal, electrical and mechanical properties of various materials, a cryotreatment test system has been designed and developed. The system was designed and developed to effect cryogenic treatment to test samples by indirect cooling with no contact with liquid nitrogen (LN2). This also ensures that no thermal shocks and crack propagation take place due to cold spots. Experiments have been carried out to study the effect of cryogenic treatment on the wear resistance properties of HSS tools and reduction in residual stresses from machined components.
