Summary

The article reviews how the market for room air conditioners (RACs), unitary air conditioners for homes and packaged air conditioners (PACs) for light commercial service has been growing since the 1940s. At present the world demand for RACs (window- and small split-types) and for PACs (including single, split packages for commercial use and unitary ACs installed in American houses) is estimated at 30 million units. Both RAC-PAC production and demand are concentrated in the United States and East Asia (led by Japan and China).
