Summary

The concept of the scroll compressor was first described by Francis Leon Creux in 1905, but it had not been produced commercially. The main reasons were the lack of a good mechanism to support the orbiting scroll in the axial direction to minimize gas leakage and frictional loss between the scrolls, and the precise production techniques for accurate spiral grooves. Hitachi started on a course of the R & D of the scroll compressor in 1975, and demonstrated a packaged air conditioner and an air compressor which used the scroll compressors at Hitachi show of technology in 1980. Thereafter, the air conditioners used hermetic scroll compressors that were first put on the market by Hitachi (a world first) in March 1983.
