Summary

AN EXPERIMENTAL AND LATER AN INDUSTRIAL SCALE WOOD DRYER WITH A HEAT PUMP HAVING CAPACITIES 7.8 CU M AND 40.50 CU M WOOD RESPECTIVELY WERE DEVELOPED. THE HIGHEST OPERATING TEMPERATURE IN THE DRYING CHAMBER IS 318 K (45 DEG C), THE DRYING TIME IS 1.5 TO 2 TIMES LONGER THAN IN CONVENTIONAL DRYERS, BUT POWER CONSUMPTION IS A THIRD OF THAT FOR CONVENTIONAL DRYERS. 1 KWH OF ELECTRIC ENERGY CONSUMED YIELDS 2.2 TO 3 KG OF WATER REMOVED. WOOD QUALITY IS EXCELLENT, HUMIDITY GRADIENT REMAINING ALWAYS BELOW 2%.
