Summary
The technique of sandwich panels appeared in Europe in the 60s: slices of insulating foam are inserted in between still plates or polyester coverage reinforced with fiberglass. In the last fifty years, the construction technology for insulated bodies remained almost identical. However, with the aim of improving insulation, reducing ageing and energy consumption, body manufacturers are now testing new solutions, such as vacuum insulation panels (VIP). This paper presents the results of K coefficient tests carried out on two refrigerated semi-trailers made by integrating the VIP system in some of their walls. The assessment of the reduction of fuel consumption obtained with a semi-trailer having VIPs insertions was also realized. This assessment was realized comparing the semi-trailer with VIP insertion having the lower Kinitial coefficient to a third semi-trailer built with standard polyurethane sandwich panels. Results show that the addition of the VIP system allows a significant improvement of the insulation properties of the bodies as well as energy saving.
