Summary

WHERE PLATE VALVES ARE MOUNTED IN THE CYLINDER HEAD, THERE ARE USUALLY PORTS OR PASSAGES LEADING BETWEEN CYLINDER AND VALVE SEAT. SUCH VOLUMES, REFERRED TO AS VALVE POCKETS, CAUSE ADDED LOSSES BECAUSE OF THEIR SHAPE AND RESTRICTION TO GAS FLOW. THE AUTHOR HAS COMPUTED THE EFFECTS OF A NUMBER OF VALVE POCKET DESIGNS AND CONCLUDES THAT IMPROVEMENTS IN EFFICIENCY CAN OFTEN BE MADE BY SIMPLE AND INEXPENSIVE CHANGES TO SHAPE AND AREA. D.W.H.
