Variable flow distribution and control valve authority.

Summary

The author finds that the control valve with a simple moving plug and orifice will determine the effectiveness of the plant. Working with variable flows in the distribution is not ideal for the control loops as the differential pressures vary dramatically, affecting the performance of the control valves. The control valves must be selected carefully with sufficient authority and the correct characteristics. Unfortunately the selection of two way control valves is not easy as the available pressure is often unknown. The situation can be improved by using a variable speed pump in the distribution. Control valve authorities will be more stable. The solution is to use local differential pressure controllers which can compensate for eventual oversizing and maintain control valve authorities close to one.
