Summary
Inverter technology is seldom employed for air-conditioning equipment, except in Japan, where about 90% of all residential air conditioners are equipped with it. The variable speed, while adapting the operation of the air conditioning installations to the thermal load, offers various advantages: improved energy performance, reduced operating costs and increased compressor lifespan. The most recent developments, in particular direct current compressors, further increase this technology's potential, by allowing up to 40% energy saving on an annual basis. The European residential sector market, mainly supplied by Japanese imports, is estimated around 250 000 inverter units per year. Apart from Japan, large European manufacturers are starting to commercialize this type of equipment, each offering a range limited to 2.5 to 4.5 kW and up to 15 kW in multi-split units. It must be envisaged that this technology will develop, particularly if the seasonal performance thresholds of marketable equipment are raised. Experiments undertaken at Cetiat show the difficulties inherent in characterizing this type of equipment, in the absence of a dynamic test protocol.
