Summary

THE AUTHOR DEFINES VIABILITY WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF CRYOPRESERVATION WHICH CAN THEN BE MEASURED AS AN INDEX ON A SCALE OF 0-100%. THERE ARE PROBLEMS IN DAMAGED SYSTEMS, AND IN ASSESSING THE QUALITY OF MATERIAL FOR TRANSPLANTS. THE PURPOSE OF VIABILITY ASSAYS IS CONSIDERED AND THE VARIOUS TYPES OF ASSAY ARE REVIEWED. THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT ASSAYS APPROPRIATE TO EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES CAN BE FOUND FOR MOST SYSTEMS, BUT PROBLEMS EXIST WHEN USING ONE ASSAY TO PREDICT FUNCTION IN ANOTHER. THERE IS NO SIMPLE IN VITRO TEST WHICH CAN PREDICT FUNCTION IN VIVO AFTER TRANSPLANTATION OF A WHOLE ORGAN. G.R.S.
