Summary

Vibration in heat exchanger tube bundles induced by cross flow can cause tube or bundle failures. Calculations for two-phase flow are complicated by contrary behaviour of the two flow regimes. Added factors, such as flow rate fluctuations, oscillations due to fluid compressibility, and the microhydraulic effects of bubble passages affect the results. The authors analyse the problem, finding that flow regime and local void-fraction are important factors. They conclude that more investigation is needed before comprehensive design guidelines can be produced. D.W.H.
