Summary

PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE FLOW DUE TO HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE ADJACENT TO A VERICAL ICE SURFACE MELTING IN PURE WATER AT TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 3.9 AND 8.4 DEG C. THESE CONDITIONS ARE OF INTEREST BECAUSE BETWEEN 4 AND 8 DEG C THE DISTRIBUTION OF HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE IS TWODIRECTIONAL ACROSS THE REGION OF HEAT TRANSPORT. THE LOCAL VELOCITIES AND THOSE OF THE HEAT TRANSPORT AT THE SURFACE HAVE BEEN PHOTOGRAPHICALLY MEASURED AND COMPARED WITH ANALYTICAL RESULTS OF CAREY, GEBHART AND MOLLENDORF (1980). THE LOCAL VELOCITIES AND THOSE OF THE HEAT TRANSFER THROUGH THE SURFACE AT 9 AND 4.7 DEG C ARE ONLY SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT FROM THE ANALYTICAL PREVISIONS.
