Visualization study of enhanced flash boiling of R22 with 5 mm steel and glass spheres.

Summary

The paper presents the qualitative results and discussion from an experimental investigation of passible enhanced flash boiling of R22 (an HCFC) from a small vessel. The experiments were designed to simulate the flash boiling process that occurs within the refrigerant accumulator of air-source heat pumps during the reverse-cycle defrost. It is shown that the enhancement method with glass and steel spheres increased the rate of total vapour production by 24-55% in the receiver when exposed to a rapid depressurization.
