Vortex lattice melts like ice.

Summary

The lattice of magnetic vortex filaments in high temperature superconducting compounds melts via a first-order phase transition. The striking experiment of Zeldov demonstrates remarkable and unconventional behaviour of type II superconductors in a magnetic field. The results are also exciting because they confirm that the vortex liquid expands on freezing, similar to the transformation of water in ice. Such behaviour is rare in nature and shows that matter composed of flexible directed lines behaves differently from assemblies of point-like atoms or molecules. DNA molecules have interactions quite similar to vortices in superconductors and one could also, for these molecules, expect density reduction on freezing. J.V.
