Nomadic vortices.

Summary
The practical applications of high critical temperature superconductors can only come from a vast amount of hard work, with success by no means assured. This is due to the pathological and mysterious behaviour of the magnetic vortices in these systems. For almost any application of superconductivity, the vortices must be pinned or prevented from moving. The first step in pinning the flux lines is to know something about their geometry. The authors have used an old technique for imaging flux lines: microscopic iron particles are used to decorate the location on the surface of the superconductor where the magnetic flux lines leave the sample. They have extended the technique to give information out of the plane of the surface by simultaneously decorating both sides of the sample and looking at correlations between the patterns on the top and bottom.
