Water-ammonia absorption cycles for solar cooling and heating applications.
Author(s) : CORALLO G.
Summary
Water-ammonia cycles are only rarely adopted for solar cooling purposes, either because very few suitable machines are available all over the world or because the temperature level for their operation is higher than in single effect water-lithium bromide machines. The capability of ammonia-water cycles to work also as heat pumps during the cold seasons, makes however them attractive in order to provide a valid alternative to shorten the payback time of a cooling and heating application. In order to develop a new machine suitable for coupling with medium temperature solar panels, like the evacuated tubes solar collectors, it was carried on a steady state simulation over a number of thermodynamic cycles, in order to find the best compromise for heating and cooling purposes. The best result among the various simulations was then chosen as basis to make a first prototype rating 18 kW chilling power, operated with hot water at 100-120°C and adopting a cooling tower for the heat rejection.
