Summary
Many countries in the world have agreed to ‘net-zero-plans’ for 2050. Those plans will need sound, suitable definitions on what to achieve with the variety of methods used in the net-zero equation by many governments and companies. The introduction describes the intention of net-zero plans, including the present status of certain combinations of net-zero measures. Concurrently, issues are discussed what it implies for the environment and which net-zero trajectories would be the best way forward. Important is the contribution to a rapid decrease of greenhouse gas emissions in the short term, while also achieving the 2050 net-zero target. The RACHP sector is largely dependent on (possibly renewable) electricity, which is advantageous in contributing to a 2050 net-zero target via a number of measures, including better performance and possible different uptakes. Where the long-term 2050 target may not be sufficient, an analysis shows what one can change and optimize in specific RACHP subsectors up to 2030. This includes performance improvement and demand optimisation both analysed in more detail here, well as emission reductions from refrigerants. Conclusions summarise the variety of measures that the RACHP sector has to take early - in the course of this decade - and look ahead to important aspects after 2030.
