A low and ‘net-zero’ emissions future.

Summary
At present there are two main challenges posed to the RACHP sector. They are often seen as inter-related in the case of low-GWP refrigerant conversions, but, in fact, they are two distinct topics that will be addressed separately in this paper. The first one is the HFC (CO2-eq.) phase-down control under the Montreal Protocol’s Kigali Amendment. This paper will first consider the impact of possible further, more stringent phase-down controls in the near future, once a global ratification of the Amendment and HFC reporting will be on the way. Such strengthening will undoubtedly impact future refrigerant choices in several RACHP sectors where high- GWP refrigerants are still used. The second even more important issue is the substantial energy consumption and total emission decrease required for all emissive uses, particularly RACHP - or how to best address the challenge of net-zero, using the often cited ‘roadmap to net-zero’. The IOR1 7-element and the EPEE2 5-step proposal, both launched in 2020, define possible ways to transfer to ‘net-zero cooling’. Taking these two proposals as the starting point, an analysis is presented of what these proposals generally imply, how they can be translated into separate or interlinked actions and what this further means for the RACHP sector as a whole.
