The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recently announced plans to standardize its inspection practices to keep up with the changing food safety landscape.
These plans are pursuant to the Government of Canada’s CAD 100 million commitment to modernize the CFIA’s food inspection system. One element of the modernization effort is the development of a single CFIA-wide food inspection programme.
CFIA currently operates 8 separate food inspection programmes (dairy, egg, fish and seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables, imported and manufactured food, maple, meat and processed products), resulting in multiple food programmes and the use of different risk management frameworks.
