China

In the People's Republic of China, targets have been recently set by the 11th Five-Year Plan to cut energy consumption by 20% per unit of GDP between 2006-2010. This entails strict energy policies in all economic sectors, including refrigeration and air conditioning. It is forbidden, for example, to cool public buildings in Beijing lower than 26°C and a special "AC police squad" has been set up to ensure that this limit is complied with in hotels, malls and other public buildings.
