France: first refrigerated barge transport

In France, an unprecedented combined waterways-road controlled temperature transportation route is to carry Ferrero chocolates from Rouen, a town located on the Seine and Genevilliers a town in suburban Paris, further upstream.
During the launching phase, the transport operation will be renewed every week, carrying the equivalent of a semi-trailer of cooled foodstuffs for the first time by river.
The operation was launched in partnership with STEF a European cold-chain logistics company and Marfret a company managed by the French waterways, VNF. It uses a refrigerated container containing 23 pallets under controlled temperature (12-18°C) loaded on the barge from a lorry on a Friday afternoon to arrive on a Monday morning. Ultimately, Ferrero aims at transporting five such multimodal containers this way weekly and claims this could reduce CO2 emissions by 30%.
