French retailers to close refrigerated cabinets
French retailers commit to equip at least 75% of their chiller cabinets with doors and glazing by 2020.
On January 16, 2012, FCD, a French retailers' association (Fédération du Commerce et de la Distribution) signed an agreement with the Ministry of the Environment, Sustainable Development, Transport and Housing, according to which they commit to equip at least 75% of their chiller cabinets with doors and glazing by 2020. The agreement was signed by companies such as Auchan, Carrefour, Casino, Cora, Fracap, Monoprix, Simply Market and System U and concerns around 700 km of cabinets.
A study by PERIFEM-ADEME estimates that the use of double glazing on refrigerated cabinets could cut their energy use by 33-50%. Until now, these cabinets accounted for almost half the energy use of retail stores.
French retailers go so far as to claim that up to 2.2 TWh (i.e. the annual power consumption of Lyons, a city of almost 480 000) could be saved annually in France; however, other sources such as the Centre d’études sur l’économie de l’énergie (CEREN) only expect energy savings of up to 10-20%.
