According to the 2012 IARW Global Cold Storage Capacity Report, which uses data from international offices of the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA), the total capacity of refrigerated warehouses was estimated at 460 million m3 in 2012. Total capacity increased roughly by 10 million m3 over 2010.
The largest cold storage industries were in the United States with 112 million m3, India (105 million m3) and China (61 million m3).

The 2008-2012 period shows significant expansion in cold-storage capacity in many parts of the world. Central and South American countries such as Colombia and Peru reported capacity growth at an annualized rate of more than 50% over the period and Chile and Mexico had growth rates of over 25% on average. Expansion was also marked in the emerging industries peripheral to the European Union: refrigerated warehouse capacity in Turkey grew by 35% annually from 2008-2012, while it expanded by 28% annually in Poland.

In many developing countries, annualized growth rate in cold storage capacity has been between 20 and 30% annually since 1998. Over this period, the fastest growth rates were in India (25%) and Costa Rica (20%). Poland has a long-term compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10%, Brazil of 9% and Turkey 8% over the 14-year period (1998-2012).
