The long awaited 25th IIR International Congress of Refrigeration (ICR 2019), and the world’s largest science and technical event covering all refrigeration technologies and applications, took place on August 24-30, 2019 in Montreal, Canada, and welcomed over 850 participants from 45 countries.
Organised against the backdrop of the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals and under the theme “Refrigeration for Human Health and Future Prosperity”, ICR 2019 provided the ideal platform to take stock of the historic Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, set to bring about a global phase-down of HFCs.
The Congress Highlights: Industry and research converge
The congress attracted over 650 papers, including 530 oral presentations, 72 posters, 17 keynotes and 1 plenary session, as well as 9 workshops, 10 IIR Commission and Working Group meetings, and 4 technical tours.
Hosted in the beautiful city of Montreal, home to a number of world renowned performing arts schools, ICR 2019 kicked-off with an extraordinary show of gravity defying stunts by acrobats Carpe Diem.
The technical programme was then officially opened by a plenary presentation by Hydro-Québec directors, Gaétan Lantagne and Christian Bélanger, on “Effective electrification and energy transition – The role of refrigeration technologies” which provided insight on the national market’s goals in line with environmental objectives.
Over the 5-day programme, delegates were spoilt for choice when deciding on which of the sessions to attend, with sometimes as many as 8 parallel sessions to choose from.
Reaffirming the interdependence of industry and research, leading HVACR companies Emerson, Honeywell and Matelex organised presentations at the Innovation Theatre, while globalFACT, Danfoss, and EPEE organised sponsored symposiums offering participants an update on the latest strategic developments in the field.
A selection of over 650 outstanding technical papers
This year, papers covered a wide range of topics from liquid air energy storage systems to an impact performance analysis of the retrofitting of doors of retail display cabinets, as well as oil-free vapour compression refrigeration systems, and high temperature industrial heat pumps, to name a few.
All of the papers will be available to download from FRIDOC shortly.
The Awards and Medals
In total, 38 awards and medals were presented during this year’s IIR congress. These were to pay recognition to those who had contributed noteworthy research and accomplished outstanding achievements in the field of refrigeration, namely:
- Gustav Lorentzen Medal awarded to Ruzhu Wang (China), Vice-president of Commission B2 – Refrigerating Equipment.
- Science and Technology Medal awarded to Bart Nicolaï (Belgium), Honorary Member of Commission C2 – Food Sciences and Engineering.
- Medal of Merit awarded to Henk van der Ree (Netherlands), IIR delegate of the Netherlands, for his long-standing valuable contributions to the IIR and its activities, and also as serving as a role model to the younger generation in the field.

Elections at IIR Statutory meetings
As is custom, the congress was preceded by the biennial IIR Statutory Meetings that set out the international strategic policies and objectives of the Institute for the next four years.
During these meetings, new presidents were elected to the different governing bodies and structural Commissions and Sections of the Institute.
