IIR advocates for sustainable air conditioning solutions at HBRC event in Cairo
IIR played a prominent role in the HBRC International Conference held in Cairo from 14 to 17 December 2024. Its representatives led discussions on sustainable air conditioning, emphasising its technical and financial feasibility in Egypt and MENA region.
The International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR) took center stage at an international conference hosted by the Housing and Building National Research Center (HBRC, a governmental research institution in Egypt that focuses on research, development, and innovation in the fields of housing, building, and construction. During the event, the IIR addressed the critical need for sustainable refrigeration and air conditioning (AC) solutions to combat emissions in the building sector. Represented by Yosr Allouche, Director General, and Souhir Al-Hammami, Director of Scientific and Technical Information Departement, it reaffirmed its commitment to advancing green building technologies in the MENA region through the implementation of clean and energy-efficient refrigeration and air-conditioning solutions.
A highlight of the event was the panel discussion co-organised by IIR, titled “IIR Cool Dialogue on Policy Innovations and Financial Solutions for Sustainable Cooling Technology in MENA.” Moderated by Ayman Eltalouny, Senior Programme Officer at UNEP, the session featured distinguished experts, including Alaa Olama, Chair of the Egyptian Permanent Committee of Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning, alongside the IIR representatives.
The dialogue spotlighted cutting-edge and emerging air conditioning technologies, their financial and technical feasibility, and the regulatory frameworks necessary for their implementation. Discussions explored the potential of passive cooling solutions to reduce energy demand, integration of renewable energy in AC systems, innovative financing mechanisms such Cooling as a Service (CaaS), green bonds and climate finance, and strategies to overcome barriers to adoption.
The event concluded with actionable recommendations, urging governments and industry stakeholders to prioritise energy-efficient AC technologies that align with global climate goals. By addressing economic and policy challenges, the MENA region can unlock the potential of sustainable cooling solutions to drive a greener future.
