IIR engages in COP13/MOP36 and COP29 to highlight the key role of sustainable refrigeration for all in handling climate change

Two major events in the fight against climate change and protecting the future of our planet, COP13/MOP36 and COP29, are held in October and November. The IIR is taking part in these United Nations conferences by organising several side events, bringing together experts, refrigeration industry stakeholders and policymakers to scale up the implementation of sustainable refrigeration.

COP13/MOP36

The 13th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Vienna Convention (COP13) and the 36th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol (MOP36) are being held in Bangkok (Thailand) from 28 October to 1 November. The IIR is taking an active part in this major event, organising two discussions to explore the conditions for producing sustainable refrigeration, in particular through energy efficiency improvement and use of environmentally friendly natural refrigerants.

  • Monday, 28 October: “Advancing Energy Efficiency: Innovative Refrigeration and Cooling Solutions for a Sustainable Future” (12:00-14:00, Room CR-3)

The IIR and the Cool Up partner programme hosted a side event bringing together global experts, industry leaders, and policymakers to explore energy efficiency in the cooling sector. The panel highlighted the importance of advancing energy efficiency and technology to cut cooling-related energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions, sharing best practices and discussing financing options to support these efforts.

  • Wednesday, 30 October: “Overcoming Barriers to Natural Refrigerant Adoption in Emerging and Developing Countries: Policy and Technological Pathways” (18:00-20:00, Room CR-3)

This IIR side event delved into the opportunities and challenges surrounding the adoption of natural refrigerants in emerging and developing economies. Exploring current policies and regulations, experts and national representatives highlighted the hurdles faced by the industry and governments and provided strategic insights to overcome them. The discussion also highlighted regulatory frameworks, recent technological advancements, and potential pathways to leapfrog toward sustainable, environmentally friendly refrigerant-based solutions.

COP29

In November, the IIR will also take part in the 29th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), to be held on 11-22 November in Baku, Azerbaijan. On this occasion, the Institute will be co-organising a round table with its partners CLASP, SEforALL and AEEE on the importance of tracking energy efficiency progress in the countries of the Global South.

  • Friday, 15 November: “Tracking Efficiency Progress in the Global South” (16:45-18:15, Blue zone, Room 7)

This side event will bring together a range of experts, representatives of international organisations and national policy officers to address the critical issues of monitoring efficiency progress in the fight against climate change. In particular, the discussion will assess the measures implemented by governments in response to their climate commitments and will explore some effective tools for ensuring that progress is rigorously monitored.
