The IIR-Gustav Lorentzen Conference series continues to grow

A record-breaking 300 participants welcomed at the

13th IIR-Gustav Lorentzen Conference

Hosted by the Universitat Politècnica de València under the hot Mediterranean sun in Spain, the 13th IIR-Gustav Lorentzen Conference took place from June 18-20, 2018.

With a focus on natural refrigerants, principally ammonia, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons, the 13th conference in the series attracted the largest number of participants yet, welcoming an impressive 300 individuals from 45 different countries and featuring 182 papers.

Over the three days, the conference programme offered 4 streams of research presentations, 6 keynote addresses, technical site visits and cultural tours, as well as IIR Commission and Working Group meetings, and lots of networking time.

The conference papers, including the keynotes, will be available to download from the IIR online Bookshop shortly.

Catch up on the IIR Commission and Working Group meetings

  • Joint Commission Meeting (Monday, June 18)

Reaping the benefits of an already fruitful collaboration, Section B (Commission B1 on Thermodynamics and Transfer Processes, and B2 on Refrigerating Equipment), Commission D1 on Refrigerated Storage and Section E (Commission E1 on Air Conditioning, and E2 on Heat pumps and Energy Recovery) came together to hold a joint meeting.

Over 30 participants exchanged thoughts and ideas as the Commission and Section presidents presented an overview of the accomplishments and future objectives of their respective commissions.

Publication activities included updating the “Guide: Ammonia as a Refrigerant” for Section B, drafting IIR Informatory Notes on Demand-oriented non-uniform indoor environments (Commission E1) and on Simultaneous Heating and Cooling Heat Pumps (Commission E2), identifying training materials to be included on the IIR website and increasing participation in IIR co-sponsored conferences across the globe.

  • IIR Working Group on Refrigeration Safety (Tuesday, June 19)

The first meeting of this newly inaugurated Working Group, chaired by Alexander Cohr Pachai, was met with vivid enthusiasm as participants welcomed the initiative to raise awareness and clarify the personal and corporate risks and responsibilities in the HVACR industry, as well as the terminology used within the industry, which can sometimes lack clarity.

Lively debate helped to explore and share the experiences, concerns and incidents that participants may have encountered themselves or through others, such as the Elk Grove Village food manufacturing plant incident in Chicago, USA, in 2017, or the ammonia gas leak that caused an explosion in Kanpur, India, in 2017.

The IIR would like to thank the Universitat Politècnica de València, and particularly José Miguel Corberán Salvador who took the initiative to lead and organise a successful 13th IIR-Gustav Lorentzen Conference, and all those who attended.

Save the date: See you at the next conference in the series
