Researchers from Kansas State University, USA, claim they have proved that the use of LED lights in refrigerated display cabinets can improve the shelf life of fresh meat.

They compared the use of LEDs and fluorescent lamps in meat refrigeration units and observed discoloration, rancidity and system operating efficiency for five different meat products.
Results showed that LED lights produced colder internal product temperatures, which required less cooling for similar results.
It also helps extend shelf life, according to the tested aspects, colour in particular: the shelf life of steaks was extended by up to 1 day.
