Moderate growth of the AC market in Brazil in Q2 2024

Data from Brazilian Association of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Ventilation and Heating (ABRAVA) present production and sales of air conditioning equipment for the first semester of 2024.

According to the Brazilian Association of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Ventilation and Heating (ABRAVA), the air-conditioning market in Brazil presents a moderate growth in the midst of an economic scenario marked by inflationary challenges and variations in regional equipment sales.

Data from the October issue of the ABRAVA “Economic Bulletin HVACR Thermometer” reveal mixed performance in the different categories of products in the first and second quarters of 2024.

Production of AC units in Brazil

In the first half of 2024, there was a significant growth of 71.3% in number of split AC units produced, jumping from 1,922,331 in July 2023 to 3,294,408 in July 2024 [1]. This significant increase reflects a recovery in the demand for split ACs.

Production of AC split systems in 2023 and 2024 [1]

Data on central air-conditioning systems, such as chillers and air treatment units (AHU), are more mixed.  Between January and August 2024, production of chillers decreased by 1.6% compared to the same period of the previous year. Measured in tonnes of refrigeration (TR), the production decreased from 138,643 TR in 2023 to 136,482 TR in 2024.

On the other hand, production of central split systems and air treatment units (AHU) both grew in TR by 20% and 11% respectively.

Sales of AC units in Brazil

There are significant differences in sales of refrigeration equipment between regions of the country. For instance, in Q1 of 2024, sales of split AC units were mainly concentrated in the regions of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo, which accounted for 49% of the market [2]. These regions were the most affected by heatwaves in 2023.

With sales of domestic appliances up by 3.6% in Brazil in July 2024, industry professionals are optimistic [1]. A survey conducted among professionals from the Brazilian refrigeration sector revealed about one quarter believe that the recent heatwaves in September 2024 should positively affect sales and installation of refrigeration equipment in Brazil.
