New IIR Informatory Note

The IIR has issued a new Informatory Note, The Role of Refrigeration in Worldwide Nutrition, prepared by Jean-Luc Dupont and reviewed by Silvia Estrada-Flores, David Tanner, Don Cleland, Gerald Cavalier and Robert Heap. It presents an overview of the global status of food security and the role of refrigeration in food safety and security. The need for extensive, high-performance cold chains is highlighted in order to reduce post-harvest losses - which average about 25% of the food production worldwide - and to address the issue of undernourishment, especially in the least-developed countries. The setting up of cold chains for perishable products that are as extensive and reliable as those in industrialized countries would enable developing countries to raise food supply by about 15%.
