Obituary : Gerald Groff

Gerald Groff, former President of Section E and very active in the IIR died on September 15.

The IIR would like to express its sincere condolences to the family and relatives of Gerald Groff, who died on September 15, 2019.


Gerald Groff has been President of IIR Section E on Air conditioning, heat pumps, energy recovery from 2000 to 2007. He also was Vice Chairman of the US IIR National Committee from 1995 to 2007 and was involved in the preparation of the IIR Strategic Plan during the 2003-2007 period.


Within the IIR Science and Technology Council, he also was in charge of the liaison with the IIR International Congress of Refrigeration from 2000 to 2003. He actively participated in the preparation of the 2003 Congress in Washington DC, United States, whose organization was particularly appreciated.

He was appointed as an honorary member of the IIR in 2007.


Gerald Groff was also a fellow and life member of ASHRAE and has served as chairman of ASHRAE’s International Activities Committee. He also served on the society’s Board of Directors as a director at large. Recently, Gerald Groff had been selected to receive the 2017 John F. James International Award from the ASHRAE.


Gerald Groff’s international involvements include participation in the International Energy Agency’s Heat Pump Program.


He has published over 50 technical papers and books on air conditioning, heat pumps, fans, acoustics, building systems, building energy.
