Refrigeration appliances drove the French market for large household equipment in 2020

According to Gifam, a grouping of home appliance brands, sales of household freezers, wine coolers and refrigerators increased in France in 2020.

Every year, Gifam, a grouping of home appliance brands, presents an assessment of the French household appliance sector for the previous year. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the household appliances sector grew by 5% in value and 9.1 billion euros in turnover in 2020.

Cold appliances accounted for 27% of the appliance market in 2020, with a 4.7% increase in sales. In particular, two product families benefited from lockdown and curfew measures: freezers and wine coolers. After several years of decline, freezer sales increased by 18% in value.

According to Gifam, wine coolers represented a pleasure purchase, up 7.5% in value. It should be noted there was already a 12% increase in sales of wine coolers in 2019, the largest increase of all cold appliances that year. With a household equipment rate of 9% in 2020, manufacturers believe that this market still has potential for growth.

Refrigerator sales increased by 2.1% in 2020, compared to an increase of 3.3% in 2019.
