Sales of domestic refrigerators decline in France in 2023

According to Gifam, a grouping of household appliance brands, sales of domestic refrigerators in France declined in 2023, due to a challenging property and economic context. 

In February, as every year, Gifam, the gouping of household appliance brands, presented its outcome of the French household appliance sector for the previous year. [1] See our previous article on this topic. 

 

After several years of historical growth, the household appliance market declined in 2023, affected by the the rising cost of living and the decrease in the property market. The downturn in building projects naturally led to a drop in the need for brand new electrical appliances. According to a survey, 4 out of 10 French people reported limiting their purchases of household appliances in 2023 to replacements in case of breakdowns. [2] In 2023, the houshold appliance market amounted to €9.5 billions, which means a fall of -2,2% compared to 2022, but still up +10,0% compared to 2019, the last reference year before COVID-19. 

 

Refrigeration accounted for 29 % of the household appliance market by value in 2023, with a decrease of the sales revenue of -4,9 % compared to 2022. A slowdown in sales was observed for all domestic refrigeration appliances : refrigerators (-4,5 % in 2023, instead of +3,9 % in 2022), freezers (-5,2 %) and wine cellars (-11,5 %). 

 

Despite a sluggish scenario in 2023, projects of moving out and renovate kitchens could enable the sales of electrical appliances to rise again in 2024. Furthermore, consumers are paying more and more attention to the environmental and energy footprint of their appliances. According to Gifam, a quarter of French people want to replace their equipment with more energy-efficient ones. [3] At the european level, the number of sales revenue of A, B and C label combined refrigerators increased by +77% in the first half of 2023. [4]
