Solar panels on car’s roof to power the air conditioning system

The German car manufacturer Audi recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the US solar cells specialist Alta. They plan to work together to integrate high-efficiency photovoltaic cells into the panoramic glass roofs of Audi models. The electricity generated from the cells will flow into the car’s electric system and can supply, for example, the air-conditioning system and seat heaters. The first prototype will be developed by the end of 2017, according to Alta. In the future, almost the entire roof surface is to be covered with solar cells. Building on that, it could be possible to use solar to directly charge the electric vehicles’ traction battery in the future.
