South Korea joins Horizon Europe

South Korea, an active IIR member country, is the first Asian country outside Europe to officially join the EU’s research and innovation programme, Horizon Europe, from 2025.

After New Zealand and Canada, in March 2024 South Korea successfully reached an agreement with the EU to join the Horizon Europe programme. This is a unique opportunity for Korean and European researchers to cross-fertilise their scientific knowledge, create synergies maximising the impact of innovation globally.

From 2025, Korean research institutions will be able to apply for funding on an equal footing with EU research institutions, under pillar II of the programme, which focuses on innovation to address industrial and global challenges.

This new cooperation represents a step forward for South Korea, a country with exemplary scientific and technological capabilities to foster international cooperation for the benefit of global society.
