Tyson agrees to pay fine to settle EPA case

In June, the Environmental Protection Agency filed a claim against Tyson Prepared Foods for not filing a timely and complete plan for managing the regulated toxic substance anhydrous ammonia, which was used as a refrigerant at their meat-processing plant in Manchester, US. Under the Clean Air Act, companies are required to submit a risk management plan if they use more than 10 000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia. The EPA claimed that Tyson operated the facility without a risk management plan and hence failed to properly manage the risk of potential leaks. Tyson Prepared Foods has agreed to pay a civil penalty of 26 075 US dollars to settle the claim.
