Résumé

With the current rise in the global blue food demand, it is crucial to investigate the current and future aquaculture production technologies and their potential impact on the environment. We are looking at 6 different technologies for salmon aquaculture in Norway with various levels of maturity and market presence: closed, semi-closed, land-based, offshore, submerged and traditional. We are using life cycle assessment (LCA) to estimate the environmental impacts on global warming, terrestrial acidification, freshwater and marine eutrophication, freshwater and marine ecotoxicity, and biodiversity loss when producing 1 kg salmon at farm gate. Across all technologies we find the main contributors to the environmental footprints to be diesel consumption in vessels during the grow-out phase, on-farm electricity consumption, metal use in equipment and direct emissions of organic matter and other pollutants. Semi-closed technology has the lowest impacts in four impact categories, while offshore has the highest impacts across five impact categories.
