Résumé

This book, retracing 200 years of history, tells the story of a company, pioneer in refrigeration, which was founded during the Industrial Revolution and has continued in business ever since. Halls have made remarkable improvements in the technology of industrial refrigeration. By the early 1920s they had installed more than half the world's marine cargo refrigeration, to bring chilled and frozen meat halfway round the world from producer nations with an unwanted surplus to eager consumers in Europe. In food storage on land, in brewing and other processing industries too, the company was among the world's leaders. Air conditioning has been added to the refrigeration specialty. The book records the struggles that carried the business triumphantly through two world wars, economic crises at home and overseas, and the pressure of competitions. It records also a unique double event, a centenary within a bicentenary in the hundred years of refrigeration and two hundred years of existence. Included are specific chapters on freezing and on regarding the company's involvement in CO2 technology. Many historical photos illustrate the book.
