Résumé

Storing Bramley apples in low ethylene 9/12 is effective in controlling scald for at least 6 months even where the scald risk is high. For other cultivars, it is important to evaluate ethylene removal under different controlled atmosphere regimes, since marked synergistic effects are apparent for Bramley, and to consider additional methods of reducing ethylene production. Combining 5/1 with ethylene removal has been particularly effective in controlling scald in Bramley, however, the risk of CO2-injury still remains and delaying controlled atmosphere may affect the ability to control ethylene production so that ethylene scrubbing may be less effective. Reducing O2 concentration below 1% improves the control of scald and maintains fruit quality where controlled atmosphere establishment is delayed.
