Summary

An 18-T cryocooled superconducting magnet (18 T-CSM) has been successfully developed. The magnet has a 52-mm room temperature bore. The magnet composition and the magnetic field assignments are as follows; an outer NbTi coil generates 6.2 T, four Nb3Sn coils 9.3 T and a Bi2223 high-Tc insert coil 2.5 T. A GM-JT cryocooler and two single-stage GM cryocooler cool the superconducting coils and a radiation shield. The initial cooldown took 11 days. The ramp-up time to 18 T is 60 minutes. The 18 T CSM generates magnetic field of 18.1 T, which is the world's highest field generated by a conduction-cooled magnet.
