Summary

This report provides an update on global cold storage capacity. The primary data source was a survey administered in fall 2012. Updated data on refrigerated warehouse capacity is reported for 39 countries in 2012. Trends are analyzed based on the database of the International Association of Refrigerated Warehouses (IARW) and the 2010 IARW Global Cold Storage Capacity Report.
In an analytical section of the report added for the first time in 2012, the findings of a study on the relationship of income to development of the refrigerated warehousing industry are reported.
For a selection of countries tracked since 1998, a longitudinal quantitative study of the income effect on expansion of the refrigerated warehouse industry is conducted.
For 2012, cross-sectional analysis across the 52 countries reporting to the IARW indicates the relationship of income and market penetration of refrigerated warehousing, measured with warehouse capacity per capita.
Total capacity of refrigerated warehouses is estimated at 460 million cubic meters worldwide in 2012, an increase of roughly 10 million cubic meters (m3) over 2010. During the last two years, approximately 6 million m3 of additional refrigerated warehouse capacity has been added to the IARW database from countries that are covered by this survey for the first time.
The following countries are newly added to the IARW database in 2012: Hungary, Indonesia, Morocco, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, Ukraine, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, and Yemen.
