Summary

THE TOTAL PRODUCTION OF FOODSTUFFS IN THE WORLD IS MORE THAN ENOUGH. THE PROBLEM IS IN DISTRIBUTION. A CLOSED COLD CHAIN COULD PREVENT LOSSES OF PRODUCTS AND IMPROVE DISTRIBUTION, TO FREE THE THIRD WORLD FROM STARVATION. HOWEVER, SUCH A COLD CHAIN CANNOT BE REALISED IN THE SHORT TERM, BECAUSE OF ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL CONSTRAINTS. THE ONLY SHORT-TERM POSSIBILITY FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES IS COOLING AND FREEZING OF VALUABLE PRODUCTS FOR EXPORT. THIS WILL ENHANCE THE ECONOMY. IN THE LONG TERM THE COLD CHAIN CAN BE BUILT UP STEP BY STEP. THERE IS A NEED FOR CHEAP AND RELIABLE REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS AND FOR GOOD TRAINING OF REFRIGERATION TECHNICIANS AND PRODUCT TECHNOLOGISTS FOR OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE.
