A cooling system driven by district heating.
Type of article: Article
Summary
The demand for cooling and air conditioning is rising rapidly in Swedish cities. The main reason for this is the increased use of computers and other office equipment that generate incidental heat within the building. Swedish office buildings are generally well insulated to protect against the cold winters, and in summer indoor temperatures may be very high. At these times district heating systems also have low loads and operating temperatures. A new system developed at Chalmers Technical University in Gothenburg takes advantage of this by using district heating to drive a cooling system. The system was inaugurated in the summer of 2000.
