Summary

Absorption refrigeration is a well-known technology for refrigeration applications. Cogeneration of power and refrigeration can improve significantly the energy utilisation efficiency. Various thermodynamic cycles with ammonia/water (NH3/H2O) as working fluid, have been suggested in the literature for the generation of power and refrigeration. However, the use of NH3/H2O working fluid has some limitations due to the rectification process. In this study, thermodynamic analyses of a modified single-stage absorption refrigeration cycle with non-conventional working fluids (ammonia/lithium nitrate and ammonia/sodium thiocyanate) are performed. The three working fluids are compared using several performance indicators. The simulation results have shown that ammonia/lithium nitrate and ammonia/sodium thiocyanate are suitable alternatives to NH3/H2O working fluid.
